Over the next few days we'll be adding a new page to eyesover.com called "Issue Watch" where we will be monitoring events so you can see the Eyesover system working in real time.
If you go through the Blog archives, you'll know we enjoy monitoring political races since the massive number of online comments and variety of issues puts the Eyesover system through a great workout. As a result, first up on Issue Watch will be the US Presidential election. We'll be monitoring all four candidates based on the number of mentions and the sentiment within those mentions in order to calculate our support index.
As the system has been collecting data over the past week, some very interesting results are already appearing, none more surprising than the strength of the Libertarian and Green candidates.
As you can see, while polls place Johnson and Stein at approximately 10 and 5 percent respectively, based on our analysis, the online discussion of these two candidates and the positive sentiment within those discussions gives them a combined 25% of the overall support. A continuation of this trend would have a seismic effect on the race.
Our sentiment analysis indicates that reports of dissatisfaction with Trump and Clinton are accurate meaning many individuals find both candidates unacceptable. Enter Johnson and Stein, two candidates whose timing could not be better. They are clearly becoming the benefactors of the negativity towards the two main party candidates. What will be interesting to determine is whether this is a mere blip in support or if there will be a sustained move away from the Republican and Democratic candidates.
